8 Simple Steps for Gravel Driveway Installation
Your new gravel driveway can be installed in eight simple steps:
- Decide where the driveway will be placed and mark the perimeter with landscape stakes and string.
- Clear any grass and topsoil from the marked path. To save time and energy, you may decide to have your driveway professionally excavated.
- Multiply the height, length, and depth of the driveway to determine the cubic feet needed. Then, convert the number to cubic yards by dividing the number by 27. We can help you determine how many tons of gravel you'll need.
- Call us for gravel delivery.
- Level the path of the driveway by hand or by using a backhoe. We also recommend laying down a weed barrier to prevent grass from growing through the gravel.
- We recommend using #4 crushed limestone as the base layer for your new driveway. The stone must be compacted and pressed into the soil in order to create a solid foundation. A bulldozer or heavy truck is the best way to accomplish this.
- Next, spread the second layer of gravel. #53 crushed limestone is recommended for this layer due to its ability to compact well while allowing for water drainage.
- Finally, spread and smooth the top layer of gravel. Our customers typically prefer #8 crushed limestone, but river rock or pea gravel is also ideal.
